What is a Pyometra?
The word Pyometra is derived from Latin "pyo" meaning pus and "metra" meaning uterus. It is the term used to describe a pus-filled uterus.  The infection can travel through the body causing organ damage especially kidney failure and will result in death if left untreated. Treatment for this infection typically involves the surgical removal of the female reproductive organs.  The operation removes both ovaries, the uterine horns, and the body of the uterus, thus removing the infection. Older unspayed females are prone to uterine infections.
Similar to a spay but done with extreme care as to prevent rupture of the pus filled organ, which could cause contamination of the abdomen.
