Dewclaw removal is the surgical removal of the first digit, sometimes referred to as the "thumb". This toe is located on the inside of the front and/or back of the paws.
The dewclaw is often loosely connected to the paw, which only requires a pair of surgical scissors to quickly cut the skin, bone and nail of the digit . The skin is then sutured or glued with surgical adhesive. Sutures need to be removed in 10-14 days. Older pets will have a bandage placed over the incision for 2-3 days.
