What  are Anal Glands?
Anal glands are located on both sides of the anus. These glands produce secretions that are normally expressed during defecation. Sometimes these glands become plugged up and are unable to express, they then become impacted and can lead to inflammation or infection.
Chronic/recurrent anal sac infections and anal gland tumors are indications for anal gland removal.

Some types of anal sac disease include:

  • Tumors

  • Inflammation

  • Impaction

  • Infection or abscess formation

Signs to watch for are:

  • Scooting or dragging the anus on the ground or carpet

  • Reluctance to sit or sitting asymmetrically to avoid the painful anal sacs

  • Straining to defecate, difficulty defecating, production of smaller, ribbon like stools.

  • Frequent licking of the anus

Anal gland removal can be performed at the Howell Veterinary Care Center under general anesthesia where both glands are surgically removed.
