What is an Abdominal Exploratory?
An abdominal exploratory is a surgical procedure involving  the opening of the abdominal cavity to examine every organ in the abdomen for abnormalities.
These surgeries are sometimes necessary to collect biopsy material, remove a tumor from an organ, repair a hernia,  or to retrieve a foreign body from the intestines.

Possible Candidates for Abdominal Exploratory Surgery may include:

  • Animals with hernias

  • Animals with vomiting or diarrhea

  • Animals with tumors in any abdominal organ

  • Animals that have ingested a foreign body

  • Animals with bite wounds or gunshot wounds that may have penetrated the abdomen which may have caused injury to internal organs

  • Animals that have other nonspecific signs of illness in combination with other test results that may indicate a problem with an organ.
